CoQ10 - Coenzyme Q10 for a strong heart!

  CoQ10 - Coenzyme Q10 for a strong heart!

  1. A simple search on the oracle google with the words Coenzyme Q10 gives an outstanding  3.480.000 results. But if you ask google scholar, then the result is 50.500 results of scientific articles available for study. Hence, there's a lot of science available about this supplement;
  2. It’s also known as Coenzyme Q10, ubiquinone, ubiquinol and ubidecarenone and it was discovered in 1957;
  3. Although it can be produced by the body it requires at least eight vitamins and many trace elements and is a multistage process [1]. Therefore, it's not easy to the body to produce it;
  4. Science is positively conclusive about the use of CoQ10 for all sorts of cardiovascular diseases. Most of the benefits of CoQ10 came from it’s role in improving the capability of the cells to produce energy [2];
  5. CoQ10 is found in the “batteries” of the cells – the mitochondria, which are the organelles responsible to burn food, converting it in energy via APT molecules;
  6. Remember, the heart never stops pumping, so it needs constant and efficient production of energy in it’s cells, especially in the cells of the muscle heart (cardiomyocytes). Imagine that you would need to keep doing an exercise to you biceps, to keep moving your arm to exercise your biceps without stopping it anymore. After a while doing this you would feel done! So now you can imagine how strong and resilient is the the myocardium muscle, and how much energy it requires to keep exercising forever. It's the only muscle in our bodies that starts exercising when you are still at your mother's belly and only stops the day you die;
  7. CoQ10 is a very important molecule that exists on the heart muscle in great abundance, (but also in every cell of the body in the mitochondria) and has an important role of giving energy (it helps to produce ATP – the molecule of energy) and, therefore, to help the heart to keep pumping efficiently;
  8. It’s been prove that a supplementation intake of CoQ10 does increase the levels of CoQ10 in the heart tissues and in the mitochondria of the heart too, and also improves mitochondrial efficiency and even improves the resistance of myocardium cells to hypoxia-reoxigenation [3];
  9. Clearly you need the righ quantity of CoQ10 inside the mitochondria of the heart muscle (cardiomyocytes) in order to improve the strength of your heart, especially after a Heart Attack or any surgeries in the heart;
  10. Also many cardiovascular diseases have been correlated to low levels of CoQ10 [4]. Such as 70 – 75% of cases of heart disease occur the patients that have low levels of CoQ10 [5];
  11. CoQ10 also has effect for treatment of hypertension as many studies have shown the efficacy of CoQ10 to reduce blood pressure in hypertension patients [6];
  12. CoQ10 is also an anti-arrhythmic agent [7], and it’s mechanism of action might be related to the power of CoQ10 in reduce ischemia that can cause arrhythmia and also by it’s power to enhance the energy production in the heart muscle cells [8];
  13. Also it’s important to mention that CoQ10 has an antioxidant effect, been a free radical scavenger [9];
  14. Statins medication (medications to low the cholesterol levels) causes decrease of the CoQ10 level [10];
  15. The dosages suggested to keep normal levels of CoQ10 in the serum vary in between 30-60 mg/day. But in order to have clinical benefits the dosage must be in between 60-120 mg/day and 120-180 mg/day [11];
  16. However, to treat chronic heart disease the optimum dosage is 100-200 mg/day [12];
  17. It is suggested that several mounts with high dosage might be necessary in order to get the concentration levels of CoQ10 high in the body (especially in the heart) and also to give time to the body to fabricate dependent apoenzimes that are necessary to work together with CoQ10 [13];
  18. But more recently it was found that, in order to improve the fraction ejection (which is basically the fraction of blood that the heart can pump each time) it’s necessary higher dosages such as 450 mg/day. This dosage was capable to improve the fraction ejection from 24% to 45% [14]. This basically represents a great recovery of the heart capability to pump blood each time;
  19. That also indicates a consequent improve in cardiovascular capability, resulting in improve in exercises and less fatigue;
  20. The risk of high dosages intake of CoQ10 was tested in 2006  and the researchers conclude that up to 1.200 mg/day is safe to take [15].
